A mined and a lab-grown round brilliant diamond shown side by side, with the words Both are diamonds

Choosing between a mined and lab-grown diamond is not about deciding which one is a “real” diamond. Both are diamonds, sharing essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties. The meaningful differences are their origin, growth history, price and the grading reports that accompany them.

At John Macintyre & Son, we love and embrace both. Since 1965, we have helped customers choose diamonds for life’s most important moments. That love of diamonds, together with our knowledge and careful eye for quality, lies behind our long-standing name, The King of Diamonds. We do not believe one origin is right for everyone. Our role is to explain the differences honestly, assess every diamond carefully and help you choose the one that feels right for you.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) are independent gemmological laboratories that examine diamonds and issue grading reports.

Mined & Lab-Grown

Five Differences at a Glance

Select each point to reveal a short, honest explanation.

MINEDFormed deep within the EarthOrigin⌄LAB-GROWNGrown in a controlled environment using advanced technology

Most mined diamonds formed around 150–200 kilometres below the Earth’s surface, and some were carried upwards by fast-rising kimberlite or related volcanic eruptions. Lab-grown diamonds are produced from a diamond seed using one of two principal methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). Each method creates conditions in which carbon can crystallise as diamond.

MINEDImmense geological time, often billions of yearsTimescale⌄LAB-GROWNTypically several days to several weeks

Mined diamonds formed over immense geological time deep within the Earth. Lab-grown diamond growth typically takes several days to several weeks, depending on the method, desired size and quality. Although their timescales are very different, both result in crystallised carbon with essentially the same properties that define diamond.

MINEDGenerally higher at a comparable specificationPrice⌄LAB-GROWNGenerally lower at a comparable specification

Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less than mined diamonds with broadly comparable specifications. A fair comparison should consider the complete diamond specification, including shape, carat weight, colour, clarity, cut or proportions, polish, symmetry and fluorescence. Carat weight alone does not tell you how a diamond will look or perform.

MINEDGeological origin, history and finite supplyMain appeal⌄LAB-GROWNModern technology and greater specification flexibility within a price range

Some customers are drawn to the extraordinary geological history and established jewellery tradition of a mined diamond. Others value the choice of size or specification that a lab-grown diamond can provide within their price range. There is no universal winner. The best choice is the diamond that suits the wearer, the ring and the priorities behind the purchase.

MINEDGIA-graded mined diamondsOur grading reports⌄LAB-GROWNIGI-graded lab-grown diamonds

We offer GIA-graded mined diamonds and IGI-graded lab-grown diamonds. Each independent grading report identifies the diamond’s origin and records its quality characteristics within that laboratory’s own grading system. GIA created the 4Cs framework used throughout the diamond industry and has long been central to the independent grading of mined diamonds. IGI pioneered full grading reports for lab-grown diamonds and continues to record the detailed 4Cs information that customers recognise and understand. The report records the grades. We assess the individual diamond.

The Individual Diamond Still Matters

Origin does not decide how beautifully a diamond will perform. Cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, measurements, proportions and finish all influence its appearance.

Two diamonds with similar grading results can still look different when viewed side by side. This is why we consider the individual diamond as well as its grading report.

Where possible, we can show customers the loose diamond and its grading report before it is set. For customers choosing remotely, we can also provide clear photographs and a video of the individual diamond when available.
