PLATINUM EDUCATION

Why Choose Platinum?

A naturally white precious metal, beautifully suited to diamond engagement rings, wedding rings and eternity rings.

Choosing an engagement ring often begins with the diamond, but the precious metal surrounding it shapes how the finished ring looks, feels and wears.

At John Macintyre & Son, Platinum 950 is our preferred white metal for diamond engagement rings. Its naturally white colour complements diamonds without relying on rhodium plating, while its durability suits jewellery worn every day.

For many customers, platinum becomes the naturally white thread connecting an engagement ring, wedding ring and, perhaps one day, an eternity ring. We can help you consider how the rings will look, fit and wear together.

01 — WHY PLATINUM

Platinum at a Glance

  • Platinum is naturally white, so it does not rely on rhodium plating to maintain its colour.
  • Platinum 950 contains at least 95% pure platinum.
  • Its durability makes it well suited to carefully designed diamond settings and claws.
  • Platinum develops a softer surface finish, known as patina, and can be professionally polished when needed.
  • It is naturally dense, so a matching platinum ring will often feel more substantial than one made in gold.
  • Platinum is currently priced below 18ct white gold in our white metal engagement ring range, although precious metal prices can change.

During a private appointment, we can explain how platinum and white gold differ in appearance, weight, maintenance and price, helping you decide which is best suited to your chosen design and how you plan to wear it.

02 — PLATINUM AND WHITE GOLD

A Pleasant Pricing Surprise

It may surprise you that platinum, traditionally regarded as a premium precious metal, is currently priced below 18ct white gold in our white metal engagement ring range. We choose Platinum 950 first for its qualities and suitability for everyday jewellery. The current price advantage is a welcome extra.

Precious metal prices can change, so we will confirm the current options and prices for your chosen design.

Comparing Platinum and 18ct White Gold Wedding Rings

For a practical price comparison, we checked our matching 6 mm concave wedding band in Platinum 950 and 18ct white gold. At the time checked, the platinum version was priced below the matching 18ct white gold version. We will confirm the current prices for your chosen design.

Prices checked 18 October 2026. Prices can change, and comparisons must use matching designs and specifications. 9ct gold remains a less expensive option.

03 — JENNIFER’S RINGS

Platinum and White Gold After Years of Wear

One of the best ways to understand how platinum and white gold change over time is to compare rings that have been worn for years.

A Personal Example from Jennifer

"These are my own two rings. My platinum engagement ring has not been professionally polished for around 11 years, while my 18ct white gold dress ring is rhodium plated every few years. I wear them on different hands, but photographing them together lets you see the difference in their appearance. My platinum ring has developed a softer finish, known as patina, while I have my white gold ring replated to maintain its brighter white appearance."

Understanding the Difference in Everyday Care

Platinum develops a softer patina with wear. It does not need rhodium plating to maintain its naturally white colour, and professional polishing is optional if you prefer a brighter finish.

18ct white gold is often rhodium plated for a bright white finish. As the coating wears, the warmer colour of the gold alloy beneath may become more noticeable. Replating can restore the brighter appearance.

If you wear three white gold rings plated with rhodium, you may eventually choose to have them replated at the same time for a consistent finish. This is a paid service, and how often it is needed depends on wear. We offer rhodium plating for jewellery purchased from John Macintyre & Son and will explain the cost before any work is agreed.

04 — DESIGN AND SETTING

Choosing Platinum for Your Rings

Choosing Platinum for Your Engagement Ring

Platinum is particularly well suited to the claws and mount that hold your diamond, provided the setting is carefully designed and made. Diamond security depends on choosing the right number, type, size and placement of claws for the diamond's shape. For example, a V shaped claw can help protect the vulnerable point of a marquise diamond. The claws should hold the diamond securely without unnecessarily obscuring it, and the skill of the person setting the diamond remains essential.

We consider all of these details when selecting our engagement rings. Regular checks are also important because even a carefully made setting can wear or be damaged through everyday use. For engagement rings purchased from us, we recommend a complimentary check every six months, or sooner if you have any concerns.

From Engagement Ring to Wedding Ring

When choosing your wedding ring, it is worth considering how it will sit alongside your engagement ring, both in appearance and through everyday wear.

We generally recommend a platinum wedding ring with a platinum engagement ring. Rings worn together naturally come into contact, and platinum can increase wear on an adjoining 18ct gold ring over time. Matching the metals also helps maintain a consistent colour and finish.

If you already have an 18ct white gold wedding ring and are choosing a new engagement ring, we can discuss matching 18ct white gold options. We will look at how the rings fit together, explain the differences and help you make an informed choice.

Adding an Eternity Ring

If you add an eternity ring to platinum engagement and wedding rings, we would generally recommend continuing with platinum. We will also consider how all three rings sit together, as the shape and setting of an eternity ring can affect the fit, particularly when diamonds are set close to the edges.

We can help you choose a design that complements your existing rings, including custom fit options where needed, so the rings look beautiful together and feel comfortable to wear.

Yellow Gold with a Platinum Setting

If you prefer the warmth of 18ct yellow gold, you can still benefit from platinum around the diamond. Many of our mined and lab-grown diamond engagement ring designs can be ordered with an 18ct yellow gold shank and a Platinum 950 head.

The yellow gold shank gives the ring its warm colour, while the naturally white platinum head showcases the diamond without relying on rhodium plating. Platinum's toughness also suits carefully designed claws, although skilled setting and regular checks remain important.

We will confirm which combinations are available for your chosen design.
